The side event aims to contribute to a focused discussion on the merits of pricing of carbon in South Africa. Trading of GHG emissions, a carbon tax and other economic instruments could be key means to implementing options in the Long Term Mitigation Scenarios (LTMS). Following the LTMS And Treasury's work on environmental fiscal reform, the Finance Minister has indicated that options for putting a price on carbon are being Investigated for implementation.

13:10-14:10 Carbon Capture and Storage as a Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Measure in South Africa
Carbon capture and storage is part of a menu of measures to mitigate the emissions of greenhouse gasses. A previous study undertaken by the CSIR for the Department of Minerals and Energy indicated that geological storage of carbon dioxide was feasible in South Africa. Recently, the development of an atlas to locate and characterise potential geological storage sites has commenced. This event will present the latest activities in carbon capture and storage in South Africa, including the establishment of a Centre for Carbon Capture and Storage and the commissioning of associated research projects.
